Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 4 To Ditch AMOLED for PLS LCD Panels?

The smartphone market is changing, and we’re not talking about new smartphones constantly being launched. Big companies see their status threatened by “emerging” Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and the list goes on. These manufacturers have been able to launch some pretty interesting smartphones throughout the year, and prices are very competitive as well. As such, the big players in the mobile world -such as Samsung- might end up doing whatever necessary in order to cut the prices of their products. But, in order to do so, manufacturers can’t offer lower quality products for the sake of a lower price. Ideally, smartphone companies need to do whatever it takes in order to reduce production costs.

As such, rumors now have it that Samsung might abandon its lengthy legacy of fitting its Galaxy S / Note series with AMOLED panels, and adopt LCDs instead. More details after the break.

According to the Korean media, Samsung is considering the possibility of fitting PLS CLD displays on its future Premium smartphones such as the Galaxy S5 and Note 4. The reason for this is, once again, the reduction of production costs. According to the reports, manufacturing and fitting a PLS LCD would cost Sammy 20% less than it would doing the same with a Super AMOLED panel.

Since I know there are a lot of Super AMOLED fans out there, I should emphasize the fact that the decision is not yet made. Once again, Sammy is considering this possibility, but nothing has been set in stone yet.

We should also point out that the Samsung Galaxy S5 with flexible screen (if real), will evidently not be affected by this change. Furthermore, there might be certain benefits to fitting the Note 4 with a PLS LCD panel, mainly the possibility that Samsung could potentially deliver a better S-Pen experience.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see what Samsung will eventually decide, but until then, what are your thoughts on the possibility that AMOLED panels could become more popular on Samsung tablets, and less common on its smartphone line-up?
