Xperia™ L added to our AOSP for Xperia project on GitHub [open source]

Today we’ve added Xperia L to our growing Android™ Open Source Project (AOSP) for Xperia devices, letting you build and flash Android 4.4 (KitKat) on your unlocked Xperia L. This is the first time we’ve added support for a device with the 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core chip. Read more about the project and how to participate after the jump!
Current status of the AOSP for Xperia L project
Even though the software is not suited for everyday use, and important functions like Bluetooth™ and GPS are still disabled, there are actually a lot of things working already. It is possible to make phone calls, send and receive messages, surf the Internet through either the mobile network or Wi-Fi® connection, take photos and shoot video clips. The LED light, NFC and sensors are also working (at least partially).
Want to participate?
As for all of our AOSP for Xperia devices, all collaboration and contributions are handled through the GitHub tool. In the readme files, you’ll find all the instructions and information required to get started. Make yourself familiar with the code, and feel free to take a look at the ‘issue list’ to see where you might be able to help out and possibly add your own contributions to the code. And don’t forget to check out our other devices included in the AOSP for Xperia devices project.

Sony’s WALKMAN app update rolling for Xperia Z1, and more…

We have a new version of Sony’s WALKMAN app rolling*, and as part of our behind the scenes series, we managed to catch up again with Maiko Ishida, Senior Experience Planner for Sony’s WALKMAN app to tell us a little more about it.
Maiko: My developer team and I have been reading social, blog and forums to get your feedback on Sony’s WALKMAN’s app; working away to make the changes and improvements you’ve voiced as important.
maikoAs a result of all the comments, we’ve adjusted our priorities and added in a few new ideas to make the best music player together with you.
So now we are ready to share some of the updates that will be delivered to you from this week! The latest WALKMAN update (version 8.0.A.0.4) brings pretty significant changes – I’ll take you through the highlights now…
We saw many of you finding our “smart” playlist functionality useful, but also suggesting new additions, so we’ve added:
  • “Newly added” playlist
  • “Most played” playlist
  • “Now playing” indicator for songs, albums and playlists
Some of our Music Unlimited* fans asked for the ability to save playlists shared by friends… well, now here you go:
  • “Save a friend’s shared playlist function”
We also noticed many, many TrackID™ users were reviewing their search history over and over. Why? Because it represents a list of tracks you really liked when you first heard them on radio, cafe, etc.
This got us thinking; wouldn’t it be sweet if you had your TrackID™ history as a WALKMAN playlist, with automatic track collation, so you could listen whenever you wanted? Now we’ve added it in this release:
  • “TrackID™ history playlist**”
That’s all well and good, but say you’re not a Music Unlimited subscriber yet; you might be unsure of your favourite tunes residing in the catalogue (despite the fact it’s over 22 million songs)? No problem. We’ve added a 30-second free preview mode to every track in Music Unlimited’s library.
  • “30sec free preview of every track in Music Unlimited’s library”
There’s no limits – we’re also offering free trial periods to listen to full tracks, and to use it on offline environment.
We working continuously on performance enhancements and fixes, with even more updates planned. Some of them take a little time to come together, but we’re confident where we’re going is: the best, most beautiful music player available – something completely unique and recognisably, Sony.
The update rolls globally this week for Xperia Z1, as well as Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z.
Hope you enjoy this release – let us know, we’re listening :)
Maiko.

Samsung Electronics gives impetus to the synergy between cameras and smartphones…

Samsung Electronics integrated the Digital Imaging Business Division, in charge of cameras, with the Wireless Business Division. Samsung Electronics began to create synergies between smartphones and cameras in a bid to capture the largest share of the global mirrorless camera market in 2015. Also, earlier this year, the company created the Enterprise Business (EB) Team, and turned the global B2B Center into a quasi-business division. Its intention is to reinforce B2B sales as the consumer goods market is saturated.

Samsung Electronics executed reorganization on December 11.

Samsung Electronics maintained the 3-company business system: vice-chairman Kwon Oh-hyeon (DS: Device Solution), CEO Yoon Boo-geun (CE: consumer electronics) and Shin Jong-gyun (IM: IT Mobile). Global economic recession continues, but they performed excellently. We need to keep an eye on the IM Company during this organizational realignment. Samsung Electronics removed the Digital Imaging Business Division in charge of cameras. Samsung Electronics reshuffled it into the Imaging Business Team, and plans to make full use of the Wireless Business Division which has the leadership in the global market.

Samsung Electronics explained, “We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones.” To increase its share of the camera market, it will take advantage of the networks and marketing know-how of the Wireless Business Division and enhance the camera competitiveness of smartphones at the same time. Under the Media Solution Center of the IM Company, Samsung Electronics created the Big Data Center. It looks like a measure to actively respond to changes in trends by means of Big Data analysis. Some business divisions, such as the Washing Machine Business Division, have already capitalized on the Big Data analysis technique to produce visible outcomes.

The DS Company will enhance its research competency. Its intention is to find future revenue generators like memory solutions, application processors (AP) and foundries. To this end, the Solution Development Office and the Modem Development Office were created in the Memory Business Division and the System LSI Business Division respectively.

Just a year after the establishment of the EB Team, the global B2B Center was elevated to a quasi-business division. It means that the company is reinforcing its overseas B2B sales and marketing. It looks like a measure to improve the profitability of the CE and IM Company. A Samsung Electronics insider said, “As it became a quasi-business division, manpower will be greatly increased.” Samsung Electronics, which has been concentrating on the consumer goods market, has been reinforcing B2B sales since 2011, and began to produce visible results this year. “The B2B Company is improving evenly in major markets around the world,” said a high-ranking Samsung Electronics official. “It is raising its market share by bringing B2B lineups to the market with a high level of reliability and brand awareness.” A representative example is that the Large Format Display (LFD) company saw its global market share go up from 12.0% in 2011 and 18.3% in 2012 to 25.5% in the first half of this year.

In the personnel shake-up, which was carried out on the same day, 5 out of 10 regional directors were transferred. Lee jong-seok, director in charge of North America (vice-president) will also serve as CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America (STA). Bae Gyeong-tae, director in charge of the Middle East (vice-president) will become director in charge of Korea, and Lee Chung-ro, executive director of the Digital Appliance Business Division, will become the director in charge of the Middle East.

Kim Seok-pil, vice-president in charge of Europe, will serve as head of the global marketing office and head of the global B2B Center, and Lee Seon-woo, head of the video strategy marketing team (vice-president) of the VD Business Division, will take charge of Europe. Lee Seon-woo will be replaced by Park Gwang-gi, vice-president in charge of Southeast Asia, who will, in turn, be substituted by Kim Moon-soo, executive director of Strategy Team 1 of the Future Strategy Office.

The vacant position of the HR Support Team will be filled by Park Yong-gi, executive director in charge of the HR Support Team of the Future Strategy Office, and Nam Gung-beom will become head of the Finance Team. Oh Gyeong-seok, vice-president in charge of the Development Office of the LED Business Division will take the helm as head of the LED Business Division.

iPhone 5S beats Galaxy S4 as top smartphone worldwide

Apple saw a big boom in China where its market share jumped to 12 percent from 3 percent in just one month, according to Counterpoint Research.

Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 both outsold Samsung's Galaxy S4 worldwide in October, says market researcher Counterpoint.
In its latest Market Pulse report released Thursday, Counterpoint said that the iPhone 5Sretained its top spot for global smartphone sales in spite of supply shortages that forced customers to wait to snag the phone. As 5S supply has ramped up, the research firm expects Apple to meet even stronger demand for November and December.
The iPhone 5 took home second place in Counterpoint's rankings, leaving the Galaxy S4 in third. The iPhone 5C was No. 4, followed by Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy S4 Mini.

Apple fared well across the world but most notably in China where its market share surged to 12 percent in October from just 3 percent in September, transforming it into the country's third largest smartphone vendor. A deal with China Mobile, which reportedly has already been reached, stands to drive up Apple's share among Chinese consumers even further.
"With a China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple's iPhone 5S at all three [Chinese] carriers will for sure ignite a 'price war' boosting the overall iPhone 5S sales in China," Counterpoint analyst Tom Kang said in a statement. "This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China."
Counterpoint's monthly Market Pulse report culls its sales data from surveys of major retailers and distributors across 33 countries.

Apple’s iPhone 5s is the world’s bestselling phone for two months in a row now

According to Counterpoint’s Monthly Market Pulse report for October 2013, Apple’s iPhone 5s continued to be the bestselling phone globally during October. iPhone 5s sales saw an upward sales momentum as Apple continued expansive roll-out for its flagship model thus further widening the gap with its arch rival’s flagship model Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Apple’s iPhone 5s topped the best-seller’s list despite the component shortages causing long waiting periods in several channels. However, we expect supply constraints to ease resulting in supply to meet a relatively stronger demand in November & December.
- iPhone 5s pushes Apple’s share up in US, Japan and now China
Apple’s iPhone 5s helped Apple surpass Samsung in the US as well as maintain its leadership position in the Japanese smartphone market during October. Apple’s smartphone marketshare climbed to 12% mark in China in October, instantly making it the 3rd largest smartphone player in the market up from a modest 3% share in September. Although the iPhone 5s didn’t attract long queues outside Apple retails stores as the iPhone 4S did couple of years ago but it definitely was more successful compared to what iPhone 5 registered in terms of overall sales in a month. Also, with China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple iPhone 5s at all three carriers will for sure ignite a ‘price war’ boosting the overall iPhone 5s sales in China. This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China.
Counterpoint Research - Apple 12 Percent Smartphone Share in China in Oct 2013

- Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and TCL-Alcatel showing good signs in October
Meanwhile, the Galaxy S4 sales saw a temporary uptick due to a price discount in some markets during October. However, with Galaxy Note III capturing the limelight, it has pushed Galaxy S4 towards the end of its ‘flagship lifecycle’. Galaxy S4 sales continued to lose its mojo after enjoying roughly 9 months of flagship lifecycle. Whereas, Galaxy Note III sales rose fast during the month as the phablet became the fifth bestseller only after 40 days of launch which is exceptional performance for a device perceived to be niche. Samsung’s products took about half of the top 10 list and the top 20 list as it exercised its marketing and distribution muscle to sell its broad and deep Galaxy smartphone portfolio. Few of Nokia’s Asha phones also were in the top 20 list alongside the hit Lumia 520 which drove the Windows Phone momentum across prepaid markets of Europe, US and Asia during October.
Meanwhile, TCL-Alcatel and Huawei had one device each in the top 20 bestselling list. Based on the October performance and channel trends we estimate TCL-Alcatel and Huawei will be the fastest growing brands in Q4 2013 surpassing the growth of domestic rivals Lenovo and ZTE. Both the vendors are doing well in Latin America, Asia and will benefit from expanding channels across Europe and North America.
