RDK to enable accelerated development of next generation video services
At The TV of Tomorrow Show 2013, Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, announced that it has licensed the Reference Design Kit (RDK) from RDK Management LLC in order to significantly accelerate the Set-Top Box(STB) and Gateway development cycle, and deliver a rich, multiplatform home entertainment experience.
The Reference Design Kit (RDK) is a pre-integrated software bundle developed and licensed to create a common framework for powering IP or hybrid Set-Top Boxes and gateway devices for CE manufacturers, system-on-a-chip (SoC) vendors, and other software developers, system integrators and TV service providers. The RDK was developed to accelerate the deployment of next-generation video services and prevent software fragmentation by providing speed-to-market, collaboration and standardization. Supported by more than 100 licensees, RDK Management, LLC was formed as a joint venture between Comcast Cable and Time Warner Cable to administer the RDK. “As a leading provider of Pay TV CPE worldwide, Samsung recognizes the value of a common platform,” said Stephen Goldstein, Vice President and General Manager, STB at Samsung Electronics America’s Enterprise Business Division. “The RDK allows Samsung to deliver devices to operators faster and with broader scale. Samsung has already begun deploying Set-Top Boxes based on the RDK and we look forward to more RDK-based projects in the United States and abroad.”
“One of our goals with the RDK program is to accelerate development of an advanced software solution throughout the industry, which allows MVPD’s the opportunity to provide enhanced user experiences across a broad set of STB, gateway, and SoC platforms," said Steve Heeb, President and General Manager of RDK Management, LLC. “Samsung’s support of the RDK helps expand it as global platform available to operators around the world.”

Samsung Electronics gives impetus to the synergy between cameras and smartphones…
Samsung Electronics integrated the Digital Imaging Business Division, in charge of cameras, with the Wireless Business Division. Samsung Electronics began to create synergies between smartphones and cameras in a bid to capture the largest share of the global mirrorless camera market in 2015. Also, earlier this year, the company created the Enterprise Business (EB) Team, and turned the global B2B Center into a quasi-business division. Its intention is to reinforce B2B sales as the consumer goods market is saturated.
Samsung Electronics executed reorganization on December 11.
Samsung Electronics maintained the 3-company business system: vice-chairman Kwon Oh-hyeon (DS: Device Solution), CEO Yoon Boo-geun (CE: consumer electronics) and Shin Jong-gyun (IM: IT Mobile). Global economic recession continues, but they performed excellently. We need to keep an eye on the IM Company during this organizational realignment. Samsung Electronics removed the Digital Imaging Business Division in charge of cameras. Samsung Electronics reshuffled it into the Imaging Business Team, and plans to make full use of the Wireless Business Division which has the leadership in the global market.
Samsung Electronics explained, “We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones.” To increase its share of the camera market, it will take advantage of the networks and marketing know-how of the Wireless Business Division and enhance the camera competitiveness of smartphones at the same time. Under the Media Solution Center of the IM Company, Samsung Electronics created the Big Data Center. It looks like a measure to actively respond to changes in trends by means of Big Data analysis. Some business divisions, such as the Washing Machine Business Division, have already capitalized on the Big Data analysis technique to produce visible outcomes.
The DS Company will enhance its research competency. Its intention is to find future revenue generators like memory solutions, application processors (AP) and foundries. To this end, the Solution Development Office and the Modem Development Office were created in the Memory Business Division and the System LSI Business Division respectively.
Just a year after the establishment of the EB Team, the global B2B Center was elevated to a quasi-business division. It means that the company is reinforcing its overseas B2B sales and marketing. It looks like a measure to improve the profitability of the CE and IM Company. A Samsung Electronics insider said, “As it became a quasi-business division, manpower will be greatly increased.” Samsung Electronics, which has been concentrating on the consumer goods market, has been reinforcing B2B sales since 2011, and began to produce visible results this year. “The B2B Company is improving evenly in major markets around the world,” said a high-ranking Samsung Electronics official. “It is raising its market share by bringing B2B lineups to the market with a high level of reliability and brand awareness.” A representative example is that the Large Format Display (LFD) company saw its global market share go up from 12.0% in 2011 and 18.3% in 2012 to 25.5% in the first half of this year.
In the personnel shake-up, which was carried out on the same day, 5 out of 10 regional directors were transferred. Lee jong-seok, director in charge of North America (vice-president) will also serve as CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America (STA). Bae Gyeong-tae, director in charge of the Middle East (vice-president) will become director in charge of Korea, and Lee Chung-ro, executive director of the Digital Appliance Business Division, will become the director in charge of the Middle East.
Kim Seok-pil, vice-president in charge of Europe, will serve as head of the global marketing office and head of the global B2B Center, and Lee Seon-woo, head of the video strategy marketing team (vice-president) of the VD Business Division, will take charge of Europe. Lee Seon-woo will be replaced by Park Gwang-gi, vice-president in charge of Southeast Asia, who will, in turn, be substituted by Kim Moon-soo, executive director of Strategy Team 1 of the Future Strategy Office.
The vacant position of the HR Support Team will be filled by Park Yong-gi, executive director in charge of the HR Support Team of the Future Strategy Office, and Nam Gung-beom will become head of the Finance Team. Oh Gyeong-seok, vice-president in charge of the Development Office of the LED Business Division will take the helm as head of the LED Business Division.

iPhone 5S beats Galaxy S4 as top smartphone worldwide
Apple saw a big boom in China where its market share jumped to 12 percent from 3 percent in just one month, according to Counterpoint Research.

Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 both outsold Samsung's Galaxy S4 worldwide in October, says market researcher Counterpoint.
In its latest Market Pulse report released Thursday, Counterpoint said that the iPhone 5Sretained its top spot for global smartphone sales in spite of supply shortages that forced customers to wait to snag the phone. As 5S supply has ramped up, the research firm expects Apple to meet even stronger demand for November and December.
The iPhone 5 took home second place in Counterpoint's rankings, leaving the Galaxy S4 in third. The iPhone 5C was No. 4, followed by Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy S4 Mini.
Apple fared well across the world but most notably in China where its market share surged to 12 percent in October from just 3 percent in September, transforming it into the country's third largest smartphone vendor. A deal with China Mobile, which reportedly has already been reached, stands to drive up Apple's share among Chinese consumers even further.
"With a China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple's iPhone 5S at all three [Chinese] carriers will for sure ignite a 'price war' boosting the overall iPhone 5S sales in China," Counterpoint analyst Tom Kang said in a statement. "This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China."
Counterpoint's monthly Market Pulse report culls its sales data from surveys of major retailers and distributors across 33 countries.
Apple’s iPhone 5s is the world’s bestselling phone for two months in a row now
According to Counterpoint’s Monthly Market Pulse report for October 2013, Apple’s iPhone 5s continued to be the bestselling phone globally during October. iPhone 5s sales saw an upward sales momentum as Apple continued expansive roll-out for its flagship model thus further widening the gap with its arch rival’s flagship model Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Apple’s iPhone 5s topped the best-seller’s list despite the component shortages causing long waiting periods in several channels. However, we expect supply constraints to ease resulting in supply to meet a relatively stronger demand in November & December.
- iPhone 5s pushes Apple’s share up in US, Japan and now China
Apple’s iPhone 5s helped Apple surpass Samsung in the US as well as maintain its leadership position in the Japanese smartphone market during October. Apple’s smartphone marketshare climbed to 12% mark in China in October, instantly making it the 3rd largest smartphone player in the market up from a modest 3% share in September. Although the iPhone 5s didn’t attract long queues outside Apple retails stores as the iPhone 4S did couple of years ago but it definitely was more successful compared to what iPhone 5 registered in terms of overall sales in a month. Also, with China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple iPhone 5s at all three carriers will for sure ignite a ‘price war’ boosting the overall iPhone 5s sales in China. This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China.

- Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and TCL-Alcatel showing good signs in October
Meanwhile, the Galaxy S4 sales saw a temporary uptick due to a price discount in some markets during October. However, with Galaxy Note III capturing the limelight, it has pushed Galaxy S4 towards the end of its ‘flagship lifecycle’. Galaxy S4 sales continued to lose its mojo after enjoying roughly 9 months of flagship lifecycle. Whereas, Galaxy Note III sales rose fast during the month as the phablet became the fifth bestseller only after 40 days of launch which is exceptional performance for a device perceived to be niche. Samsung’s products took about half of the top 10 list and the top 20 list as it exercised its marketing and distribution muscle to sell its broad and deep Galaxy smartphone portfolio. Few of Nokia’s Asha phones also were in the top 20 list alongside the hit Lumia 520 which drove the Windows Phone momentum across prepaid markets of Europe, US and Asia during October.
Meanwhile, TCL-Alcatel and Huawei had one device each in the top 20 bestselling list. Based on the October performance and channel trends we estimate TCL-Alcatel and Huawei will be the fastest growing brands in Q4 2013 surpassing the growth of domestic rivals Lenovo and ZTE. Both the vendors are doing well in Latin America, Asia and will benefit from expanding channels across Europe and North America.

Apple scores legal victory over Samsung in South Korea
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Thursday lost its bid to ban sales of Apple Inc's older iPhone and iPad in South Korea after a court dismissed a lawsuit claiming the U.S. firm had infringed on three of Samsung's mobile patents.
The lawsuit was part of the tech giants' global courtroom battle dating to 2011, when Apple first sued Samsung for copying the look and feel of its iconic iPhone and iPad.
A judge at the Seoul Central District Court said Apple products such as the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPad2 did not violate Samsung patents on short message display methods and messaging grouping features.
The court ruled against a sale ban on the products and threw out Samsung's claim for 100 million won ($95,100) in damages.
"We are glad the Korean court joined others around the world in standing up for real innovation and rejecting Samsung's ridiculous claims," Apple Korea spokesman Steve Park said.
Samsung said it would thoroughly review the ruling before deciding to whether to appeal.
"As Apple has continued to infringe our patented mobile technologies, we will continue to take the measures necessary to protect our intellectual property rights," Samsung said in a statement.
In a separate ruling in August last year, the same court ordered Apple to pay Samsung 40 million won in damages for infringing two of the South Korean firm's wireless technology patents.
In the same ruling, Samsung was fined 25 million won for violating a patent relating to the so-called bouncing-back function used when scrolling electronic documents.
Thursday's ruling comes after a Mannheim court in Germany dismissed Apple's claim that Samsung infringed on a utility patent that pertains to a multi-language function used in smartphones.
Apple and Samsung have gone to trial twice in the past two years in a San Jose, California federal court, where juries have awarded Apple roughly $930 million in damages.
Shares in Samsung, worth around $221 billion, closed down 0.7 percent on Thursday, versus a 0.5 percent drop in the wider market.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite Allegedly Enters Production, Aiming At 30% Of Note 3 Total Sales
Rumors about an LCD version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 have started surfacing back in September, when bits of news from the Korean media were suggesting that Sammy was getting ready to launch the device sometime in November. At that time, word on the street was that Samsung hasn’t launched this device alongside the Note 3 simply because it didn’t want the premium image of the flagship phablet to be diluted by this particular handset.
Initial rumors were suggesting that the Note 3 Lite will hit the shelves in November, and that Samsung was expecting to sell 3 million units. None of this came to reality, as the “entry-level” Note 3 is still nowhere to be found. Nevertheless, we’ve just stumbled across new bits of information regarding the whereabouts of particular device, so join us after the break for more.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite Enters Production?
Korean sources are suggesting that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite has entered production. Supposedly, the company will produce 500K units in January and 1.5 million units in the second month of the year. If that is the case, then it’s probably a safe bet that we’ll this device on-stage at the Mobile World Congress in February.
Sources also claim that even though Samsung could have begun manufacturing the so called Galaxy Note 3 Lite since last month, the manufacturer decided to push back the phablet, in fear of sales cannibalization and dilution of the Galaxy Note brand name (all Note devices have been, so far, regarded as Premium devices).
As expected, the smartphone will be aimed at emerging markets. What’s more surprising is that, according to the same sources, the company expects the Note 3 Lite sales (unconfirmed name) to amount to 30% of the total Galaxy Note 3 sales.
As to what you can expect from this device in terms of specs, the Note 3 Lite will allegedly pack an LCD display measuring 5.68 inches (a 5.49-inch model was also rumored at one point) and will boast an 8 MP main camera. Yup, there’s a lot of unknown data at this point, but since the device is meant to be an entry-level device, we can’t expect it to pack a full HD display or a Snapdragon 800 CPU. We’ll keep an eye out for new info so stay tuned.

Sprint announces Galaxy S4 with support for its Spark LTE network
Sprint has announced it will soon be launching an upgraded Galaxy S4 model that will support its new Spark LTE network, which offers higher reliability and faster speeds by combining three different bands of 4G LTE spectrum. The upgraded Galaxy S4 will join the Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy Mega 6.3; the specs of the handset will remain the same as before, including a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel camera, and 2,600 mAh battery, but its modem will now support the Spark LTE network.
The Spark-compatible Galaxy S4 will cost $199.99 on a two-year contract (same as the standard Galaxy S4), or $25 on Sprint’s One Up upgrade plan. The launch is expected to happen within the “next few weeks,” which means you can expect to be able to buy the device somewhere around Christmas.

Sprint Debuts Samsung Galaxy S 4 with the Benefit of Sprint Spark
Sprint (NYSE:S) expects to begin delivery of Samsung Galaxy S® 4 (16GB) with the addition of Sprint Spark™ (enhanced LTE) to its sales channels in the next few weeks. This enhances the current version of Galaxy S 4 with a design change to take advantage of unprecedented speeds by combining all three Sprint bands (800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz) of 4G LTE wireless spectrum.
Sprint Spark allows tri-band devices, like Galaxy S 4, to support active hand-off mode between 800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz and provide data session continuity as the devices move between spectrum bands.
Sprint Spark provides the capacity to greatly improve the performance of video and other bandwidth-intensive applications while opening the way for futuristic applications. Sprint Spark is designed to support a new generation of online gaming, virtual reality, advanced cloud services and other applications requiring very high bandwidth.
Sprint plans to deploy Sprint Spark in about 100 of America’s largest cities during the next three years, with initial availability in five markets now. The first markets with limited availability are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. Sprint 4G LTE service is expected to be available by mid-2014 to approximately 250 million Americans, and Sprint expects 100 million Americans will have Sprint Spark or 2.5GHz coverage by the end of 2014.
This super-high-speed capability demonstrates 50-60 Megabits per second (Mbps) peak speeds today with increasing speed potential over time. Given Sprint’s spectrum and technology assets, it is technically feasible to deliver more than 2Gbps per sector of over-the-air speed.1
Samsung Galaxy S 4 with Sprint Spark will be available for $199.99 (excluding taxes) with a new line or eligible upgrade and two-year service agreement after a $50 mail-in rebate via reward card2 or $25 per month with Sprint One UpSM.
Customers can take advantage of Sprint One Up3, a new program that offers customers an affordable option to upgrade their device more frequently. With Sprint One Up, participating smartphone customers get unlimited talk, text and data for an introductory rate of $65 per month4 – a $15 per month savings off their Unlimited, My Way standard rate plan and Sprint’s guarantee of unlimited talk, text and data for the life of the line of service.5 Sprint One Up is also available for smartphones on the My All-in plan.
Sprint offers unlimited 4G LTE data, text and calling to any mobile device with no metering or overages, all while on the Sprint network, making it the ideal carrier for customers who want to use every feature of their Galaxy S 4 every day of the month without worry. Sprint 4G LTE is available in select markets.
Manufactured by Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), Galaxy S 4 is powered by Android™ 4.3, Jelly Bean, boasts a brilliant 5-inch full-HD Super AMOLED™ touchscreen, 1.9GHz quad-core processor and access to the Sprint 4G LTE network. It also offers Multi Window, which allows the use of two apps side-by-side.

[Video] Galaxy Gear is Santa’s Christmas miracle in Samsung’s latest ad
Can a watch make phone calls? Can a watch take a picture? These are some of the questions Santa asks his loyal elves, in Samsung’s latest ad to promote the Galaxy Gear, in a bid to get more people to buy it this holiday season. It’s a pretty nice ad, with Santa claiming the smartwatch to be a miracle after demoing some of its features; the ad also mentions the watch is now compatible with more devices than just the Galaxy Note 3, which should help a little in making it a more attractive product.
Check out the ad below.
Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Update is Now Rolling Out
Yesterday we detailed an update that was set to roll out to Galaxy Note 3owners on Verizon, and according to many of our readers, the update is now live. The update to JSS15J.N900VVRUBMJE brings a mass of bug fixes, as well as four new bloatware applications for you to either hide or completely disable if you so choose. Don’t worry, we won’t tell Big Red.
On top of added on bloatware, various fixes for incoming call displays, handwriting data entry, and email sync issues have been included. Users should also see improvements in connectivity and sound quality as well.
The full changelog is below.
Verizon Galaxy Note 3 OTA update now rolling out (JSS15J.N900VVRUBMJE)
Verizon posted details about an incoming update to its Galaxy Note 3 yesterday, and now the update has begun rolling out to devices. It carries the build number JSS15J.N900VVRUBMJE, and includes numerous bug fixes, four new Verizon apps and widgets (yay for more bloatware), and improvements to connectivity and sound quality. The full changelog can be seen in the image below, and as usual, the update will be rolling out gradually over the next few days, which means you’ll have to wait your turn for hopping on to the latest build on your Verizon Note 3.
Samsung reveals Santa is really Steve Ballmer
A new ad for the Galaxy Gear shows Santa motivating an elves' sales conference. He's more than a little like the man who cries about developers.
Santa is sacred.
He's an icon. He's a superstar. He's a traditionalist. You don't imagine him peddling one product or another. He's commercially non-denominational. At least that's how he lives in my childlike mind.
Now along comes Samsung to tell me: "No, no, ninny. Santa is a Galaxy Gear fanboy."
In a new ad that will surely shake the foundations of contemporary culture, we have Santa -- no, Samta -- speaking at what appears to be an elves' sales conference.
Samta is less the genial old man who's seen it all, done it all and knows that true love comes down chimneys, and more, well, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
More Technically Incorrect
Samta is preaching to his own choir of little people. He's making them believe that the Galaxy Gear isn't a smartwatch that's had mediocre reviews.
This watch that does some things, but not really all that many, isn't merely magical and revolutionary.
"It's a miracle," says Samta.
This ad can surely only run when the children go to bed. This might affect lives, families, even whole communities.
"Call me crazy," shrieks Samta.
Well, we'll see how crazy he is after the holiday gadget-gorging season is over and the numbers are in.
Meanwhile, how can Samsung top this? How can they make next year's Elves Sales Conference even more motivating and shocking than stark-raving bonkers Samta?
I have it: Elvis.
