StarHub successfully completes Southeast Asia’s first 3GPP standard VoLTE call in Singapore

NSN provides LTE infrastructure to support StarHub’s commercial VoLTE rollout in 2014

StarHub, a premier operator in Singapore, has successfully completed the first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) call based on IR.92* in a live network in Southeast Asia. The operator implemented Nokia Solutions and Networks’ comprehensive end-to-end approach for providing voice call services over LTE** (long term evolution).

“Together with our key technology partner NSN, we are committed to continually enabling innovative future-ready technologies and services to benefit StarHub’s customers,” said Chan Kin Hung, head of personal solutions at StarHub. “StarHub’s landmark VoLTE achievement today reaffirms our commitment towards delivering an unparalleled user experience to our subscribers, who will soon enjoy crystal clear voice calls in HD over StarHub’s 4G and 3G network anytime, anywhere.”

To enable VoLTE, StarHub deployed NSN’s Open TAS (Telecommunications Application Server) for voice, Home Subscriber Server (HSS) and IP Multi Media Subsystem (IMS). VoLTE services are part of an existing LTE agreement that was signed between NSN and StarHub in 2012. NSN had supplied its Single RAN (Single Radio Access Network) platform based on its compact and energy-efficient Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations to enable StarHub to run GSM and LTE concurrently on the 1800 MHz band.

NSN’s Global Services provide planning and optimization services, from the architecture and design stage to multi-vendor integration and core network migration, and has helped put the operator in a position to launch VoLTE commercially in its network. It also provides Implementation and Care services.

NSN joins NYU WIRELESS research center

Will jointly organize Brooklyn 5G Summit in 2014

Nokia Solutions and Networks has made a multi-year commitment to actively participate in 5G research activities together with the NYU WIRELESS research center. NSN joins NYU WIRELESS as an affiliate sponsor and advisory board member.

NYU WIRELESS is a new research center at NYU and NYU-Poly that includes more than 20 faculty and 100 graduate students. In addition to supporting the center’s research activities, including its pioneering work on millimeter wave frequencies, NSN, together with the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly), will organize the first “Brooklyn 5G Summit”, an invitation-only meeting of technology leaders who are looking at the future of wireless communications, to be held at the NYU-Poly campus on April 24-25, 2014. The jointly sponsored summit is slated to become an annual event.

NYU WIRELESS’ work in wireless communications systems, signals, and antennas on the millimeter wave (mmwave) frequency bands could result in more than a thousand-fold increase in the data capacity of mobile devices in the coming years. This is particularly good news because demand for capacity reportedly doubles annually due to steadily increasing levels of gaming, web browsing, and music and video streaming on those devices.

SK Telecom, NSN successfully complete Evolved Packet Core virtualization proof-of-concept

Demonstrate tangible benefits of telco cloud ahead of commercial deployment

Nokia Solutions and Networks has demonstrated its telco cloud capabilities in a joint proof-of-concept for Evolved Packet Core (EPC) virtualization with SK Telecom, the leading operator in Korea. This Networks Functions Virtualization (NFV) project showed successful results for capacity scaling for both throughput and signaling traffic in connection with smartphone usage patterns.

As the global demand for mobile broadband with top-of-class quality of service continues to grow, future-proof core network architecture with efficient cloud computing capabilities becomes essential. SK Telecom evaluated several vendors for its proof-of-concept project, and selected NSN’s core virtualization concept based on the company’s Liquid Core* architecture. NSN was the only vendor to successfully demonstrate a complete EPC solution in a cloud environment, including both virtualized Mobility Management Entity (MME) and virtualized S/P-Gateway elements.

“It has been satisfying to work with our long-standing partner, NSN, in yet another successful proof-of-concept project,” said Choi Jin-sung, Executive Vice President and Head of ICT R&D Division at SK Telecom. “We have now verified the feasibility of telco cloud technology and can now make plans for our future commercial cloud solutions for enhanced flexibility and operational efficiency.”

”NSN’s early lead with Liquid Core virtualization puts its proofs-of-concept into the fast lane, and racing with x86 hardware and a multi-stack cloud positions them to deliver everything operators want from NFV,” said Joe Hoffman, ABI Research.

NSN’s virtualized EPC helps operators improve their competitiveness by rapidly introducing optimal services customized to its environment. As the solution can be deployed to off-the shelf commercial IT hardware, it helps operators reduce their OPEX costs, deploy effective solutions, and easily run and manage the application.

“I’m proud of our work with SK Telecom in this exciting demonstration of our telco cloud capabilities for virtualized EPC,” said Reino Tammela, vice president, Packet Core at NSN. “This successful project shows the full benefit of our Liquid Core portfolio. We have now completed proof-of-concept projects for voice as well as packet core network functions virtualization. We proved that handling both control and user plane traffic in the cloud is feasible and a viable option to meet the performance requirements of data traffic growth.”

“I believe that NSN’s leadership position in the telco cloud with proven technology and a clear roadmap contributed to the operator’s decision to select NSN for this project,” continued Tammela. “We were able to demonstrate concrete benefits ranging from reduced deployment costs to elasticity on demand, and from faster time-to-market to software investment protection, all of which greatly contribute to SK Telecom’s readiness for its future launch of the EPC on cloud solution.”

In October 2013, NSN reinforced its multi-stack approach to telco cloud to give operators full flexibility in their choice of cloud platforms, and reinventing the telcos for cloud to get the required lean agility is one of the key pillars of NSN’s Technology Vision 2020.
