Yahoo (YHOO) announced the 2013 Year In Review, a look at the daily search habits of millions of Yahoo users. And for the first time,Year In Review takes a peek at the top trends from Tumblr. This year’s top searches on Yahoo include high-profile trials, Obamacare, and the twerk seen ‘round the world.
Election politicking dominated the top 10 searches of 2012, but this year people were a little starry-eyed. Miley Cyrus (No. 1) came into our lives like a wrecking ball and dethroned Kim Kardashian (No. 2) to become Yahoo's most searched person in 2013. Kardashian’s pregnancy, divorce and engagement guaranteed the reality star a continued place in the top 10. (She’s been a regular since 2009.) Online gaming phenomenon Minecraft came in at No. 4. As with the Casey Anthony trial of 2011, notoriety surrounding a murder trial thrust the defendant Jodi Arias (No. 8) into the top 10.

Not surprisingly, twerking (No. 6) makes the list of Yahoo’s top Web obsessions this year, but television shows like “Duck Dynasty” (No. 1), “Breaking Bad” (No. 2), and “The Walking Dead” (No. 3) dominate. The “Fifty Shades of Grey” (No. 4) craze continued this year with news of a real life Christian Grey coming to the big screen. Snapchat (No. 7), Bitstrips (No. 10), and, of course, the selfie (No. 9) saved people from a serious case of FOMO.
One thing that is sure to trend for the rest of the year is “Anchorman 2,” the much anticipated Will Ferrell sequel. Ron Burgundy himself reported on this year’s top Yahoo searches. Check out the video here.

Surprisingly, despite the dialogue about race relations, crime, and gun control that the George Zimmerman murder trial (No. 5) spawned, it was the Jodi Arias trial that took the No. 1 spot.

Nokia Chat powered by Yahoo! beta 1.3 adds performance improvements and offline support
The Nokia Chat team spends a lot of time searching for and reading your feedback. Whether you provide it on the Nokia Beta Labs discussion forums, Twitter, the Windows Phone Store, or the comments section of your favorite blog, we care about what you have to say.
So - it’s become clear to us that there are two key areas where Nokia Chat needs improvement: performance and offline support. We’re happy to say that our new Nokia Chat powered by Yahoo! beta 1.3 takes the first, of many steps, to address both.
Here’s what’s new and what’s changing:
Faster Startup - When you start Nokia Chat from a pinned tile or the app list, you’ll immediately see your contacts list and have access to past messages, while we simultaneously update both in the background after a network connection has been established. Previously, you had to wait for these updates to complete before being able to use Chat.
Improved Performance and Responsiveness - Your contacts list and conversation threads will now load faster, and scrolling through both will be much quicker.
Offline Mode - Starting Nokia Chat without a data connection? No problem! With our new offline mode, you’ll be able to read past messages and see a cached copy of your contacts list. If your data connection returns while you’re inside Chat, simply tap the connect button: we’ll re-enable message sending, retrieve new messages, and update your contacts list.
What are you waiting for? Get it today!
We hope these improvements help you spend less time waiting for Chat and spend more time having a chat with millions of other Nokia Chat and Yahoo! Messenger users. Until our next release, thank you for your continued support. We look forward to your feedback in the Nokia Beta Labs forum.
Best,
Nokia Chat Team

Vinaphone and Gemalto Bring Yahoo Messenger to All Mobile Users in Vietnam
Gemalto (Euronext NL 0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, announces the launch of its LinqUs Yahoo Messenger for SIM solution for access to Yahoo Messenger in Vietnam by Vinaphone, a leading mobile network operator in the country with 25 million subscribers. Through Gemalto’s SIM-based Yahoo Messenger solution, Vinaphone will enable its customers to enjoy all the key features offered by the full personal computer version of Yahoo Messenger, regardless of their handset model.
Vinaphone is first in the world to offer the service, and Gemalto’s LinqUs Yahoo Messenger for SIM is the only SIM-based application certified by Yahoo. The embedded software application is compatible with 100% of mobile handsets using SMS and without needing a mobile internet connection. LinqUs Yahoo Messenger for SIM offers key social messaging features including direct pop-up notification of incoming messages, offline message reception, multiple simultaneous chats in three different languages and easy contact management. Automatic login with username and password is also possible.
“Worldwide churn rate is higher among pre-paid subscribers and as Vietnam’s 90% of the subscriber base consists of pre-paid accounts, Gemalto’s solution to make Yahoo Messenger available on any handset will help us strengthen customer loyalty,” said Nguyen Hoang Hai, Manager of Business Department, Value Added Service Center, Vinaphone. “With the rising popularity of social networking in Vietnam, this is a key solution for us to grow our revenue stream.”
“People increasingly want to stay connected, communicate and share experiences with their friends on Yahoo Messenger even when they are on the go,” said Yvonne Chang, Managing Director – India & South East Asia, Yahoo. “Gemalto has developed a truly innovative solution that will enable Yahoo to be a part of users’ daily digital routines,” she added.
“Only 34 percent of the 87-million population in Vietnam uses mobile internet today, so our LinqUs Yahoo Messenger for SIM, which doesn’t require subscribers to have a smart phone to enjoy Yahoo Messenger services, comes as a very good solution for Vinaphone to target the segment of non-data phone users,” added Michael Au, Senior Vice-President of Telecommunications at Gemalto Asia. “As the number of mobile telephony subscribers grows worldwide, several emerging economies still have low smart phone penetration as well as limited data coverage in certain regions. Gemalto’s SIM-based social media solutions play an important role in helping these economies’ operators to reach these subscribers, and provide more value for money offers.”

Interest on the notes will be payable semi-annually in arrears on June 1 and December 1 of each year, beginning on June 1, 2014. The notes will mature on December 1, 2018, unless earlier repurchased or converted in accordance with their terms. The interest rate, initial conversion rate and other terms of the notes will be determined at the time of pricing of the offering. The notes will be senior unsecured obligations of Yahoo.
Yahoo intends to use a portion of the net proceeds to pay the cost of the convertible note hedge transactions described below (after such cost is partially offset by the proceeds from the sale of warrants pursuant to the warrant transactions described below). Yahoo may use up to $200.0 million of the net proceeds from this offering to repurchase shares of its common stock from purchasers of notes in the offering in privately negotiated transactions effected through one of the initial purchasers or its affiliate as Yahoo's agent. Yahoo expects the purchase price per share in such transactions to equal the closing price per share of Yahoo's common stock on the date of pricing of the offering.
The remaining net proceeds from the offering will be used for general corporate purposes, including, but not limited to, acquisitions or other strategic transactions, additional repurchases of common stock and working capital. However, Yahoo has not designated any specific uses of the net proceeds and has no current agreements or commitments with respect to any material acquisition or strategic transaction. Pending any specific application, Yahoo may invest the remaining net proceeds in short- and long-term marketable securities. Repurchases of common stock from purchasers of notes in the offering, as well as any additional repurchases of common stock by Yahoo, could increase, or prevent a decline in, the market price of Yahoo's common stock or the notes.
Yahoo today also announced that it has increased its share buyback authorization by $5.0 billion.
In connection with the pricing of the notes, Yahoo intends to enter into privately negotiated convertible note hedge and warrant transactions with one or more of the initial purchasers or their affiliates or other financial institutions (the "option counterparties"). The convertible note hedge transactions will give Yahoo the right to purchase the same number of shares of common stock as underlies the notes and are expected generally to reduce the potential dilution with respect to Yahoo's common stock upon conversion of the notes and/or to offset any cash payments Yahoo is required to make in excess of the principal amount of converted notes, as the case may be. The warrants will give the option counterparties the right to purchase the same number of shares of common stock as underlies the notes. The warrant transactions could separately have a dilutive effect with respect to Yahoo's common stock to the extent that the market price per share of Yahoo's common stock exceeds the strike price of the warrants. If the initial purchasers exercise their over-allotment option, Yahoo may enter into additional convertible note hedge and warrant transactions.
Yahoo has been advised that, in connection with establishing their initial hedge positions with respect to the convertible note hedge and warrant transactions, the option counterparties or their respective affiliates expect to purchase shares of Yahoo's common stock and/or enter into various derivative transactions with respect to Yahoo's common stock concurrently with, or shortly after, the pricing of the notes. These hedging activities could increase (or reduce the size of any decrease in) the market price of Yahoo's common stock or the notes.
In addition, the option counterparties or their respective affiliates may modify their hedge positions (and are likely to do so during any observation period related to a conversion of notes or following any repurchase of notes by Yahoo on any fundamental repurchase date or otherwise) by entering into or unwinding various derivatives with respect to Yahoo's common stock and/or purchasing or selling common stock or other securities of Yahoo in secondary market transactions following the pricing of the notes and prior to the maturity of the notes. This activity could also cause or avoid an increase or a decrease in the market price of Yahoo's common stock or the notes, which could affect the ability to convert the notes and, to the extent the activity occurs during any observation period related to a conversion of notes, could affect the amount and value of the consideration that holders receive upon conversion of the notes.
This announcement is neither an offer to sell nor a solicitation of an offer to buy any of these securities and shall not constitute an offer, solicitation, or sale in any jurisdiction in which such offer, solicitation, or sale is unlawful. The notes and any shares of Yahoo common stock issuable upon conversion of the notes have not been registered under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, or any state securities laws and may not be offered or sold in the United States absent registration or an applicable exemption from the registration requirements.
