NTT DOCOMO, INC., a personalized mobile solutions provider for smarter living, announced that it has extended its business tie-up with China's largest mobile operator, China Mobile Communications Corporation, and South Korea's leading telecom operator, KT Corporation, until January 2017. The tie-up originally was established in January 2011.
The extension paves the way for the accelerated deployment of international LTE roaming services in China, Japan and Korea, starting with the December 2nd launch of KT's data roaming service, which enables KT subscribers to enjoy DOCOMO's high-speed LTE data communication while traveling in Japan.
DOCOMO has been collaborating closely with China Mobile and KT through their business tie-up, which so far has included developing common specifications for international NFC roaming services, laying out a cross-border scheme for Wi-Fi® roaming services in the three countries and providing Japanese mobile content for China Mobile's portal, Mobile Market and KT's Olleh Market portal.
Going forward, DOCOMO expects to work even more closely with its Chinese and Korean business partners in a wide range of service areas for the greater convenience of increasing users in the three countries.

When an unknown variant of the Galaxy J, a device that’s a cross between the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, showed up recently, it wasn’t clear which market or carrier it was intended for. However, it is now pretty much a given that Taiwan’s the market where the Galaxy J will be making its first stop outside Japan, thanks to an invitation sent to the Taiwanese press that shows the outline of a device that looks strikingly similar to the currently Japan-exclusive handset, revealing a December 9th unveiling date.
The Galaxy J is basically a Galaxy Note 3, but without the S Pen or the gigantic 5.7-inch screen. The specs include a Snapdragon 800 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel camera, 32GB of storage and a microSD slot, a 2600 mAh battery, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean; devices like the Galaxy J that launch in Japan don’t usually make their way to other markets, but as previously discussed, the relatively low sales of the Galaxy S4 (compared to expectations Samsung had for its flagship), is likely the reason why the Galaxy J will be launching in Taiwan in the near future.

NTT DoCoMo’s Galaxy S4 (SC-04E) to receive Android 4.3 from mid-December
Android 4.3 will be heading out to NTT DoCoMo’s Galaxy S4 (SC-04E) in Japan from mid-December. The carrier hasn’t officially confirmed the schedule, but an announcement about the Galaxy Gear mentions that the smartwatch will be compatible with the Galaxy S4 when it launches in five new colors in the country in mid-December, which is a good indication of when we can expect the update to start rolling out.

DOCOMO to Launch One-day International Data Service
NTT DOCOMO, INC., a personalized mobile solutions provider for smarter living, announced that it will offer a one-day (24-hour) flat-rate data communications billing plan for customers traveling overseas beginning December 2.
The service, called "Global 1 day Pake," will vary in cost (980 yen, 1,280 yen or 1,580 yen) depending on the country or region of use. For example, the cost will be 980 yen for South Korea, 1,280 yen for UK and 1,580 yen for the US mainland and Hawaii.
The flat rate will apply to the 24-hour period that begins once the customer activates the service. Activation simply requires tapping a button on a dedicated app, or dialing a dedicated number. At the end of the 24-hour period, the packet communication feature in the user's mobile device will automatically turn off to avoid unintended data usage, providing peace of mind to users concerned about using roaming services overseas.
Customers can apply for the service at DOCOMO's sales channels, including docomo shops and docomo information centers.
Customers of DOCOMO's existing international flat-rate data service, Global Pake-hodai, can flexibly use this service or the new service depending on their handset or other conditions.

Samsung struggles in Japan’s phone market
Samsung Electronics saw its fourth straight quarterly decline in the Japanese smartphone market in the third quarter, according to industrial data.
The nation’s leading handset maker sold 1 million units of its overall smartphone lineup in the July-September period, posting a 9.9 percent market share, independent research firm Strategy Analytics said Sunday.
The sales figure continued Samsung’s slide from 1.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012, 1.4 million in the first quarter of 2013 and 1.3 million in the second quarter.
An industry source said the sluggish sales were largely due to the launch of rival Apple’s newest iPhones, and local companies’ revival in the market.
Apple sold 3.8 million units of its iPhone 5S and 5C in the same period, dominating the market with a 38.1 percent share even though the newest models were only released Sept. 20, the source said.
Experts attributed Apple’s growth to the combination of product quality and NTT Docomo’s dominant position in the market. This was the first time for Apple to partner with Japan’s No. 1 telecom operator as the handset maker used to supply its products exclusively to KDDI and Softbank.
NTT Docomo now appears to be distancing itself from Samsung by excluding it from its main smartphone suppliers for winter promotions.
Following Apple, Sony was ranked second with an 18.9 percent market share, selling 1.9 million units, and even Sharp outsold Samsung by 100,000, holding the fourth place in the local market.
“Considering that Korean companies like Samsung and LG have led the long term evolution market, its sales drop in the market is a sign for concern,” an industry source said. “Samsung should also contemplate developing diversified strategies apart from NTT Docomo.”

Samsung’s smartphone market share and sales plummet in Japan
Samsung continues to dominate the overall smartphone market worldwide, but in Japan, the Korean manufacturer isn’t seeing the same reception towards its smartphones as in other regions. According to industry data, Samsung managed to sell only 1 million units of its complete portfolio of smartphones in the July – September period, seeing its market share decline for the fourth consecutive year, with sales down from 1.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Many reasons are attributed to this, including the rise of local manufacturers like Sony (who sold around 900,000 more devices than Samsung), and also the launch of Apple’s new iPhone 5s and 5c - NTT DoCoMo, the nation’s largest carrier, offered Apple’s iPhones for the first time ever, contributing to the lower sales seen by Samsung’s phones despite being present in NTT DoCoMo’s lineup. It’s clear devices like the Galaxy Note 3 haven’t been able to change things around, and it remains to be seen if future smartphones like the Galaxy S5 will have any effect on Samsung’s shrinking market share in the country.
