iPhone 5s Top-Selling Smartphone at All U.S. Carriers, iPhone 5c Takes Third

The iPhone was the top-selling smartphone at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile for September, October and November of this year, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley (via AppleInsider). We previously covered Walkley's September numbers.

The iPhone 5s, which came out in the second half of September, has proved extremely popular with customers and has only recently gotten close to a supply/demand balance.

Carrier Sales
Before the iPhone 5s and 5c's release, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, Sony, and Motorola all had handsets enjoying top-three sales at at least one of America's big four carriers. Apple's September announcement pushed all but Samsung out of the picture and relegated the South Korean conglomerate's Galaxy S4 to the runner-up position across the board.

Apple has maintained a significant edge outside of the U.S. as well, even before the long-anticipated launch of the company's devices on China Mobile, the world's largest wireless carrier. The iPhone 5s was "by far the top selling smartphone...at most channels where the smartphone launched globally," Walkley notes.
Samsung's Galaxy S 4, the iPhone's chief competitor, now holds second place across all carriers with the iPhone 5c coming in third. Closer to the launch of the 5c and 5s, the 5c held second place at AT&T and Sprint.

Last year, the numbers were similar, although with different phone models. NPD claimed the iPhone 5 was the best-selling model of Q4 2012, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S III, and then the iPhone 4s and iPhone 4 models.

iPhone 5S beats Galaxy S4 as top smartphone worldwide

Apple saw a big boom in China where its market share jumped to 12 percent from 3 percent in just one month, according to Counterpoint Research.

Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 both outsold Samsung's Galaxy S4 worldwide in October, says market researcher Counterpoint.
In its latest Market Pulse report released Thursday, Counterpoint said that the iPhone 5Sretained its top spot for global smartphone sales in spite of supply shortages that forced customers to wait to snag the phone. As 5S supply has ramped up, the research firm expects Apple to meet even stronger demand for November and December.
The iPhone 5 took home second place in Counterpoint's rankings, leaving the Galaxy S4 in third. The iPhone 5C was No. 4, followed by Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy S4 Mini.
(Credit: Counterpoint Research)
Apple fared well across the world but most notably in China where its market share surged to 12 percent in October from just 3 percent in September, transforming it into the country's third largest smartphone vendor. A deal with China Mobile, which reportedly has already been reached, stands to drive up Apple's share among Chinese consumers even further.
"With a China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple's iPhone 5S at all three [Chinese] carriers will for sure ignite a 'price war' boosting the overall iPhone 5S sales in China," Counterpoint analyst Tom Kang said in a statement. "This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China."
Counterpoint's monthly Market Pulse report culls its sales data from surveys of major retailers and distributors across 33 countries.

Apple’s iPhone 5s is the world’s bestselling phone for two months in a row now

According to Counterpoint’s Monthly Market Pulse report for October 2013, Apple’s iPhone 5s continued to be the bestselling phone globally during October. iPhone 5s sales saw an upward sales momentum as Apple continued expansive roll-out for its flagship model thus further widening the gap with its arch rival’s flagship model Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Apple’s iPhone 5s topped the best-seller’s list despite the component shortages causing long waiting periods in several channels. However, we expect supply constraints to ease resulting in supply to meet a relatively stronger demand in November & December.
- iPhone 5s pushes Apple’s share up in US, Japan and now China
Apple’s iPhone 5s helped Apple surpass Samsung in the US as well as maintain its leadership position in the Japanese smartphone market during October. Apple’s smartphone marketshare climbed to 12% mark in China in October, instantly making it the 3rd largest smartphone player in the market up from a modest 3% share in September. Although the iPhone 5s didn’t attract long queues outside Apple retails stores as the iPhone 4S did couple of years ago but it definitely was more successful compared to what iPhone 5 registered in terms of overall sales in a month. Also, with China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple iPhone 5s at all three carriers will for sure ignite a ‘price war’ boosting the overall iPhone 5s sales in China. This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China.
Counterpoint Research - Apple 12 Percent Smartphone Share in China in Oct 2013

- Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and TCL-Alcatel showing good signs in October
Meanwhile, the Galaxy S4 sales saw a temporary uptick due to a price discount in some markets during October. However, with Galaxy Note III capturing the limelight, it has pushed Galaxy S4 towards the end of its ‘flagship lifecycle’. Galaxy S4 sales continued to lose its mojo after enjoying roughly 9 months of flagship lifecycle. Whereas, Galaxy Note III sales rose fast during the month as the phablet became the fifth bestseller only after 40 days of launch which is exceptional performance for a device perceived to be niche. Samsung’s products took about half of the top 10 list and the top 20 list as it exercised its marketing and distribution muscle to sell its broad and deep Galaxy smartphone portfolio. Few of Nokia’s Asha phones also were in the top 20 list alongside the hit Lumia 520 which drove the Windows Phone momentum across prepaid markets of Europe, US and Asia during October.
Meanwhile, TCL-Alcatel and Huawei had one device each in the top 20 bestselling list. Based on the October performance and channel trends we estimate TCL-Alcatel and Huawei will be the fastest growing brands in Q4 2013 surpassing the growth of domestic rivals Lenovo and ZTE. Both the vendors are doing well in Latin America, Asia and will benefit from expanding channels across Europe and North America.

Apple scores legal victory over Samsung in South Korea

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Thursday lost its bid to ban sales of Apple Inc's older iPhone and iPad in South Korea after a court dismissed a lawsuit claiming the U.S. firm had infringed on three of Samsung's mobile patents.

The lawsuit was part of the tech giants' global courtroom battle dating to 2011, when Apple first sued Samsung for copying the look and feel of its iconic iPhone and iPad.

A judge at the Seoul Central District Court said Apple products such as the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPad2 did not violate Samsung patents on short message display methods and messaging grouping features.

The court ruled against a sale ban on the products and threw out Samsung's claim for 100 million won ($95,100) in damages.

"We are glad the Korean court joined others around the world in standing up for real innovation and rejecting Samsung's ridiculous claims," Apple Korea spokesman Steve Park said.

Samsung said it would thoroughly review the ruling before deciding to whether to appeal.

"As Apple has continued to infringe our patented mobile technologies, we will continue to take the measures necessary to protect our intellectual property rights," Samsung said in a statement.

In a separate ruling in August last year, the same court ordered Apple to pay Samsung 40 million won in damages for infringing two of the South Korean firm's wireless technology patents.

In the same ruling, Samsung was fined 25 million won for violating a patent relating to the so-called bouncing-back function used when scrolling electronic documents.

Thursday's ruling comes after a Mannheim court in Germany dismissed Apple's claim that Samsung infringed on a utility patent that pertains to a multi-language function used in smartphones.

Apple and Samsung have gone to trial twice in the past two years in a San Jose, California federal court, where juries have awarded Apple roughly $930 million in damages.

Shares in Samsung, worth around $221 billion, closed down 0.7 percent on Thursday, versus a 0.5 percent drop in the wider market.

Wake Up with Pandora: Introducing the Alarm Clock on Mobile

We think most folks would agree that waking up from a deep slumber to the tune of their favorite music almost always trumps the repetitive bleeping noise that typically comes out of an alarm clock.
In August, we unveiled a new way for Pandora listeners to fall asleep to their favorite stations with the Sleep Timer, and today I’m thrilled to share that we’re releasing a new version of our Pandora app for iOS that contains another top-requested new product feature from our listeners: an Alarm Clock.
The Alarm Clock allows you to wake up to your favorite Pandora music and includes key features like the ability to snooze. When the alarm goes off, your music will begin to play with album art scrolling in the background. At this point, you can choose to snooze, turn off the alarm, or keep listening to your music simply by tapping the song title or artist name on your phone screen.
01-drawer     03-alarm_set
You can set the snooze option for 5, 10, 15 or 20 minute increments. When the snooze option is activated, your music will pause and the amount of time remaining will be displayed along with a progress bar counting down how many minutes you have left before the alarm will go off again. As an added benefit, we’ve created an easier way for those of you who are typically a slave to your snooze button to get those extra zzz’s (hint: you don’t have to be fully awake to give your mobile device a good shake). If you enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of your favorite Pandora tunes, the Alarm Clock was built to also work in conjunction with the Sleep Timer.
04-alarm_setoff     05-snooze
We know how much people rely on their Alarm Clocks to ensure a timely wake-up call, so we have put together a handful of simple tips to help you successfully start each day with your favorite Pandora music.
The Alarm Clock feature on the new Pandora app for iOS does have a few nuances so we encourage a quick visit to our step by step guide to learn more before you give it an official go.
At Pandora, we are inspired every day by consistently bringing our listeners music they love and it particularly excites us when we receive ideas for new product features and improvements directly from our listeners. So please, do keep the good ideas coming! We hope you like the new Alarm Clock feature and as always, we’d love to hear from you.
Happy snoozing…and waking up to Pandora!
P.S. We’re busy working away on an Alarm Clock feature for Android as well, so stay tuned!

China Mobile to Accept iPhone Orders This Week

China Mobile Ltd.0941.HK +0.12% plans to take preorders for Apple Inc.'sAAPL +1.26% iPhones from Thursday in Shanghai, according to an advertisement on its website, as the world’s largest mobile carrier by subscribers moves closer to launching high-speed fourth-generation mobile services in the country.

A screen shot of China Mobile’s web site.
China Mobile Shanghai’s website, running the “4G is here!” slogan, invited potential customers to preorder the iPhone 5S and other smartphones from Samsung Electronics Co.005930.SE +1.82% and Sony Corp.6758.TO +1.31% that support the company’s new 4G mobile network.

A quick test to preorder an iPhone 5S didn’t work Monday. A phone call to a China Mobile customer representative confirmed that customers can preorder iPhones from the site starting Thursday.

“Customers can begin to preorder for our new 4G services from Dec. 12 through the company’s website and some dedicated branches in Shanghai. But we will only start providing commercial 4G services after Dec. 18,” the customer services operator said.

China Mobile is preparing a pricing plan for new iPhones but the company hasn’t informed the customer services team of the details yet, the representative said.

A China Mobile spokeswoman said that she couldn’t comment on the advertisement.

China Mobile plans to unveil a new brand for its 4G services at a global partner conference in Guangzhou on Dec. 18, according to its website. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that China Mobile had signed a long-awaited deal with Apple to offer iPhones on its network.

Analysts said China Mobile is eager to launch its new high-speed services as soon as possible and it hopes new iPhones can help attract subscribers to its more profitable data services. The mobile giant has been operating homegrown 3G mobile technology and has continued to lose market share to two smaller rivals, China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd.0762.HK -0.17% and China Telecom Corp.CHA -1.00% Using more common 3G technology, China Unicom has offered iPhones since 2009 and China Telecom began selling iPhones in 2012.

According to a notice on China Mobile’s website, the company will offer commercial 4G services in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjian, Shenzhen and Nanjing by the end of this year. China Mobile also said it is striving to expand its 4G network coverage to other Chinese cities.

The Chinese carrier has offered trial 4G services in more than 10 cities for years, before the Chinese regulator issued official licenses to China Mobile and its smaller rivals to operate 4G mobile networks.

China Mobile iPhone preorders start from Thursday, ship from the 18th

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that whilst China Mobile’s 4G services do not launch until the 18th, the carrier will open preorders for the iPhone from this Thursday, the 12th of December.

The information is sourced from a customer representative conversation the Journal had with the carrier, after attempting to preorder an iPhone today, after the Journal found a new advertisement for China Mobile’s 4G service on its website (shown above).

The representative said that iPhone orders begin on Thursday.

“Customers can begin to preorder for our new 4G services from Dec. 12 through the company’s website and some dedicated branches in Shanghai. But we will only start providing commercial 4G services after Dec. 18,” the customer services operator said.

China Mobile will offer the iPhone alongside a new pricing plan, although details of the new offer are currently not known. China Mobile’s website says 4G coverage will reach Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjian, Shenzhen and Nanjing by the end of the year.

Analysts are expectantly awaiting the iPhone’s launch on the worlds-biggest carrier, with some estimating that the partnership will be attributable for about 38 million of Apple’s total iPhone sales in 2014.

Apple put up a claim to Samsung for another $ 22 million

Apple has continued to exhibit new financial claims against the Korean company Samsung. At this time we are talking about the payment of legal costs in the case, which was considered the last 15 months in the court of the city of San Jose, California. As a result of this process has been awarded a penalty in the amount of $ 930 million for copying the iPhone and iPad. Moreover, according to representatives of Apple, the amount of $ 15.7 million will not cover the actual costs and thirds of this process, since the payment of lawyers made more than $ 60 million. Besides compensation to the producer himself has requested $ 6.2 million that was spent on lawyers costs associated with hearings in the case. Overall, in favor of the winner in the dispute must be recovered $ 22 million in legal costs. Hearings on this issue will begin January 30, 2014.
