AT&T chief: We can't keep doing big subsidies on phones

CEO Randall Stephenson says wireless operators can no longer afford to suck up the costs of customers' devices. The wave of the future? Drive up network use.

AT&T's top executive says the era of big subsidies for devices is coming to an end, as wireless operators can no longer afford to fund a constant smartphone upgrade cycle.
Speaking at an investor conference in New York City on Tuesday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said that with smartphone penetration at over 75 percent and soon reaching 90 percent, wireless operators need to work harder to get customers to use more of the network rather than simply getting on the network.
"When you're growing the business initially, you have to do aggressive device subsidies to get people on the network," he said. "But as you approach 90 percent penetration, you move into maintenance mode. That means more device upgrades. And the model has to change. You can't afford to subsidize devices like that."

Last week, AT&T introduced a new pricing plan that offers an incentive to customers who keep their older phones, allowing them to save $15 a month on their service bill.
AT&T has been on the path toward creating a more balanced pricing structure for the past few years, Stephenson said. AT&T was the first major wireless carrier to eliminate unlimited data plans, replacing them with usage-based service plans. Now, more than 70 percent of AT&T's customers are on plans that charge customers based on consumption.
Stephenson also acknowledged that breaking customers of their habit of upgrading to a new phone every 18 months to two years is not an easy task. But he said a business models focused on financing rather than providing a subsidy would be "transformative" for the industry. He said the company's new AT&T Next program, which offers no-money down and 0-percent financing, drives smartphone penetration in a way that is more sustainable over time.
"If you are a customer and you don't need to upgrade your device, you can get unlimited talk and text and access to the data network for $45 all-in," he said. "You can use your own device or finance it. I think this will be very powerful. It's where we see the market going."
Stephenson said that the change in business model comes as AT&T and other wireless carriers have successfully addressed their network capacity issues and seeded the market with smartphones. Now that the dynamics of the industry have changed, he said wireless operators are able to compete "down market."
Indeed, AT&T is not the first carrier to make this move. T-Mobile USA's "uncarrier" strategy, which did away with carrier subsidized devices entirely, seems to have had an effect on AT&T's thinking. T-Mobile was also the first major nationwide carrier to offer a device finance plan.
Looking toward the lower end
He said that when carriers were capacity constrained, they focused on addressing the high end of the market. But now that more capacity is available thanks to LTE, AT&T can focus on the lower end of the market.
Stephenson also emphasized the importance of AT&T's acquisition of prepaid carrier Leap Wireless to this value strategy. Not only is AT&T getting useful wireless spectrum from Leap, but it's also getting the prepaid brand and platform.
AT&T logo
"You will see us go very aggressively in the prepaid market," he said.
In addition to pushing smartphones "down market," Stephenson also sees the connected home and connected car as businesses that will offer significant growth in the next several years. And he said that mobile video will be another important driver of growth.
Stephenson noted that the company's aggressive LTE network upgrade and its focus this past year on acquiring more spectrum will help the company usher in the video era of mobility. And he said he believes the company has plenty of wireless capacity to sustain this growth until the broadcast wireless spectrum auction, which was recently pushed back by the FCC until the middle of 2015.
"The last two years have been a full-court press to shore up our spectrum position up to and through the next auction," he said. "We are shoring up our capacity reserve in anticipation of the next growth wave, which is video. And mobile video requires a lot of spectrum."
The additional network capacity from the new spectrum and from LTE have also helped improve the overall quality of AT&T's network. Not only does AT&T claim to offer the fastest 4G LTE network in the US, but Stephenson also said the company has dramatically improved its call quality, greatly reducing the number of dropped calls. And he said the improved network will play a key roll as AT&T competes in the coming years.
"As we have success with LTE, and we get more efficiencies from LTE, we are adding capacity to the network and also freeing up capacity on our HSPA+ network," he said. "This frees us up to address a new opportunity in going down market."

AT&T resumes rollout of Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S4

It came, then it disappeared, but now it’s back again. As you already surmised from the title, the Android 4.3 update for the AT&T variant of the Galaxy S4 is now back in circulation and making its way to users of the device over the air. AT&T doesn’t mention what issue caused the update to be pulled last time, but then again, as long as users can start upgrading to the much-awaited new version of Android once again, we shouldn’t be hearing any complaints on that.

As a refresher, the Android 4.3 update adds Galaxy Gear compatibility, faster performance and improved RAM management, new camera firmware and modes, KNOX security support, and more. AT&T suggests to check for the update in the Settings » About phone » Software updates menu, though as always, you might have to wait a couple of days before the update shows up on your device.

AT&T Resumes Android 4.3 OTA Update For Samsung Galaxy S4 With A New Build

The AT&T-branded Samsung Galaxy S4 is once again getting its Android 4.3 update as an OTA. After an unexplained issue with the last Android 4.3 push, everything looks to be getting back underway according to Samsung's site and early reports on XDA. This is a big update for the GS4, but AT&T is probably going to take it slowly this time.
Screenshot_2013-11-27-13-57-29
Here's the full changelog from Samsung's site:
  • Android 4.3 OS upgrade
  • Samsung Galaxy Gear compatibility
  • Group Play 2.5
  • Samsung Apps
  • Knox
  • Drag and drop to uninstall or disable applications
  • Call reliability improvements
The new update is build number 1337UCUEMK2 – the last one was 1337UCUEMJ9. So Samsung had to change something, but the very short turnaround time indicates it wasn't anything major (some users reported keyboard issues on MJ9). The update is pretty hefty at 719MB if you're coming from the Android 4.2 software. There is also a patch from MJ9 to MK2 for people who got the last OTA that clocks in at just 28.07MB. Begin hammering the update button – no promises, though.

Update 2: Some Sweet News: KitKat Comes to Moto X First on Verizon Wireless; Now on T-Mobile, AT&T

We see our job as taking the world’s best mobile operating system from Google and building world-class products and experiences for our users. Continually making them better is just as important. So what could be sweeter than Android 4.4, KitKat, rolling out in phases to Moto X on Verizon Wireless starting today!

Our software team has been hard at work bringing the latest version of Android to our Moto X users more quickly than ever. When it came to KitKat, we couldn’t wait to deliver. Our software strategy is to build on a pure Android foundation and complement existing Google services, not compete with them. We think this latest release is just that—all the features you love about your Moto X with the latest Android OS.

The KitKat update brings a bunch of improvements, including some of our favorites:

An improved phone dialer. Now you can search for contacts directly from the dial-pad and easily see and tap on those you contact frequently.
More gallery goodies. KitKat packs in some cool, new gallery effects—such as Posterize, Highlights, and Edges. You can even use the Draw feature to annotate your photos freehand with your finger.
New Hangouts app. All of your conversations now in one place—texts, video calls, and other chats all together in one app. Plus, you can now send animated gifs and share your location.
Color Emoji. For when words aren’t enough, the Google Keyboard now includes colorful characters to send in text messages and other communications.
Drag to focus and expose. An updated camera app lets you control both the focus and exposure of your photos. Simply drag your finger to set just the right exposure and focus point.
And more… Restyled status and navigation bars, new full-screen mode, and enhancements to Motorola features like Touchless Control.

And this is just the beginning -- we will have more KitKat for Moto X news to share on other carriers and countries very soon.

For more details and information, please see our release notes or check our software upgrade page.

Android 4.3 rolling out to the AT&T Galaxy S III (I747UCUEMJB)

The international Galaxy S III’s Android 4.3 update might be on hold, but after T-Mobile, AT&T has found it good enough and has begun rolling out to its variant of the device, and become the second carrier in the U.S. to do so for Samsung’s 2012 flagship (though hopefully it won’t be pulled later because of issues). We received an email from one of our readers with a screenshot of the update’s download in progress; it is sized at 623MB, which is fairly large and makes us certain it’s the Android 4.3 update we’re looking at here.
Android 4.3 brings features such as Galaxy Gear support, KNOX functionality (though this seems to be missing from the AT&T version of the update), new TouchWiz features, improved camera firmware and features, and more, along with all the features of Android 4.3. The update will gradually trickle down to all uses in the next couple of days, though you can try your luck and check if it’s already available from the Settings » About phone » Software updates menu. It will also be downloadable via Kies, and in turn from our firmware section.
Update: Screenshots added, the build number for the update is I747UCUEMJB.

[Deal Alert] AT&T Is Offering 50% Off On Select Smartphones - LG G2, HTC One, Moto X, Galaxy S4, S4 Active, S4 Zoom, And More

If you've been waiting for an opportune time to switch to AT&T, it's now. AT&T is currently offering a limited-time sale on a handful of on-contract devices, some of which are pretty desirable. It doesn't cover everything (the almost brand-new Galaxy Note 3 is notably absent, for example) but you should be able to save a pretty penny on your purchase.
7TFl0AQ
The best deal of the lot is probably the LG G2, at least if you're looking for cheap, powerful hardware. You can get LG's Snapdragon 800-powered flagship for just $49.99. Sticking with the flagships, the Galaxy S4 is $99.99 for the 16GB model (with the tougher Galaxy S4 Active going for the same price), the HTC One is $74.99 for 32GB, and the Moto X is $49.99... though you might want to forego the savings on that phone and use the Moto Maker customization site. Shutterbugs can pick up a Galaxy S4 Zoom for $99.99, and fans of ginormous screens can get a Galaxy Mega for $74.99 or a Galaxy Note II for $99.99. There are a few more deals to be had on less popular phones as well.
Those whose contracts have expired may not be eligible for the discounts. Shipping for all the discounted phones is free. There's no mention of a promotional period or expiration date on the site, so if you want in, you should move fast. The prices show as web exclusives, so walking into an AT&T retail store might not yield the same results. Also note that there may be limited stock at these discounted prices - the half-off HTC One Mini is already showing as "out of stock" on AT&T's website.

[Deal] AT&T offering up to 50% off on Samsung devices, including Galaxy S4, S4 Zoom, and Note II

As the holiday season approaches, many of you are probably looking forward to buying a new smartphone, either for yourself or for a friend or relative, and AT&T wants to help make the holiday shopping a bit cheaper. The carrier is currently offering up to a 50 percent discount on multiple Samsung devices – the Galaxy S4 and the S4 Active are available for $99.99 for the 16GB model, while the Galaxy Note II is on offer for the same price as well.
Apart from the above top-end models, AT&T is also discounting the Galaxy S4 Zoom and the Galaxy Mega 6.3, with the camera-centric and tablet-like smartphones available for $99.99 and $74.99 respectively. You’ll need to enter a two-year contract agreement for each device; shipping is free, but there’s no mention of an expiry date on the offer, so make sure to hurry and visit the source links if any of the deals sound good to you.

AT&T Temporarily Pulls Android 4.3 Update For Samsung Galaxy S4

Remember that Android 4.3 update that started rolling out to the AT&T Galaxy S4 last week? Well, you can stop waiting for it and hitting the update button every 10 minutes – there's been a little hiccup.
nexusae0_Screenshot_2013-12-13-22-22-43_1_
After hearing some reports, we were able to confirm that AT&T has indeed pulled the update while they investigate some issues. There is no word on when it will start rolling out again, or what the exact issues was with the last update. We were told the update was on hold so Samsung and AT&T could look into "potential improvements."
This update was supposed to include Galaxy Gear support, but it looks like the Note 3 will be the only device on AT&T with support for Samsung's smart watch for a bit longer. So if you haven't received the update yet, you probably won't be getting it for a while yet.

Android 4.3 update for AT&T Galaxy S4 reportedly pulled because of unmentioned issues

Well, things don’t seem to be going too well for Samsung’s Android 4.3 updates for various devices. After the Android 4.3 update for the Galaxy S III was put on hold because of major issues, it looks like AT&T might have done the same for the 4.3 update for the Galaxy S4. According to Android Police, the update has been pulled and AT&T is currently investigating some unmentioned issues, and is looking with “potential improvements” with Samsung.

There’s no telling when the update’s rollout resume, and it makes us wonder what could be going on with the update. Has Samsung’s huge amount of add-on features become too much for the company to handle and is causing issues when adapting Android 4.3 to older devices, or did they start pushing out the updates prematurely without testing them properly? Whatever the reasons may be, here’s hoping Samsung gets everything fixed as soon as possible, instead of making users suffer by giving them half-baked updates.

Have any of you using an AT&T Galaxy S4 witnessed any major bugs or issues after the Android 4.3 update?

Update: Holiday discount on Lumia 1020, 920, 925, 1520 at AT&T. Lumia 1520 now priced only $99 !!

discounts and can be had for $99, $0.49 and $49 with 2-year contracts on AT&T. And before anyone raises doubt about “poor sales being the reason”, even iPhone 5S is being sold for discounted price of $99.
Untitled
Seems, AT&T has decided to go into “Black Friday” deal mode already. Yesterday Lumia 2520 was announced for a price of $399 which is $100 less than what it was supposed to be priced. And now, Lumia 1520 gets an online discount of $100 making its pre-order price at just $99 with 2-year contract, which is really awesome. You can rush and place your pre-order by following the link below.
This price reduction is for 2-year contracts and at AT&T only, as at MS store price remain unchanged.

AT&T sale: Nokia Lumia 1520 for only $99, NL 1020 $99, NL 925 only $49

AT&T is starting their Christmas sales early, and are handing out discounts to a wide range of their smartphones, including the still to be released Nokia Lumia 1520, which can now be pre-ordered for only $99.99 on a two year contract.
The deal is not limited to this monster however, with the Nokia Lumia 1020 also only $99, while the sleek Nokia Lumia 925 is hitting the $49 price point, and the venerable Nokia Lumia 920, which has double the storage and Qi wireless charging built-in, costing only $0.49.
For once it seems a Nokia flagship will not be encumbered with an unrealistic launch price, which will hopefully result very good holiday sales.
